Bonfire Restrictions

Restrictions on bonfires do not mar the traditional activities that occur annually when celebrating the Feast of San Juan. 

These few days before the traditional bonfires are lit, the municipal authorities of South Tenerife are calling on the residents to take responsibility and comply with the established safety measures.

In all municipalities, it is mandatory to ask permission before making any fire.

Arona has banned bonfires on beaches, except on Playa de Los Cristianos and on the beach in Las Galletas and in the Virgen del Carmen urbanization. In addition, barbecues, large drinking parties (botellones) and the use of electrical generators are not permitted. Violations will be punished according to applicable regulations.

In the permitted areas, bonfires must be built in open areas, at a minimum distance of 100 meters from buildings, trees, power lines and vehicles. The bonfires may not be larger than three meters in diameter and three meters high and may only be lit from 8.00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23rd until 1:00 a.m. on June 24, 2024.

Adeje as in Arona, the fires may not be lit until 8 p.m. on Sunday. Adeje has established some mandatory rules, including a safe distance between the fires and buildings, a ban on the use of flammable products and ensuring that the fire is not higher than two meters and no wider than three meters.

San Miguel de Abona it is also mandatory to inform the municipality of each bonfire. The minimum safety distance is 20 meters from buildings, electricity supplies, urban furniture and vehicles. The bonfire must not be higher than two meters with a maximum diameter of three meters.

Granadilla de Abona Council has planned two bonfires of its own. One in El Médano and one in Los Abrigos, where there will also be entertainment. The municipality prohibits making bonfires on surfaces consisting of sand, stones or rocks. The prohibition applies to the surface around a swimming pool within the protected areas. The use of gas cylinders and flammable liquids is prohibited.

In all cases, it is essential to have a water source nearby in case the bonfire needs to be extinguished or to keep it under control. Those responsible for the bonfires are not allowed to leave the area until the fire is completely extinguished.
