If you can manage to prise yourself away from the sun lounger, the island of Tenerife is just begging to be explored. Hiring a car is a great way to become acquainted with the island, and the journeys you take to reach your destinations will often be a highlight in themselves. With great roads and ever-changing vistas from every corner, what are you waiting for? Here are some of the most scenic driving routes in Tenerife.
1. The road to Masca
If you want dramatic scenery, the TF436 road from Santiago del Teide to Masca is the one to conquer. Not for the faint hearted, there are plenty of twists and turns and near vertical cliff drops, but the views of the pinnacles, gorges and white-washed village of Masca are more than rewarding.
2. The spinal route
The inland drive from La Laguna to El Portillo is known as the spinal route, as it forms the backbone of Tenerife. It’s on this route that you get the unique chance to glimpse both sides of the island, whilst also drinking in the views of lush pine forests and other-worldly volcanic rock formations.
3. Coastal route
If you’re looking for scenic driving routes in Tenerife that stick to the coastline, you’ll find that if you’re enjoying holidays in the Costa Adeje, the Adeje to Los Gigantes drive taking the TF47 hard to beat. You’ll pass the pretty west coastal resorts of Playa San Juan, Alcala, Playa de la Arena and Puerto Santiago, before reaching the dramatic cliffs of Los Gigantes. This is a perfect route if you want to stop off at the resorts along the way.
4. Beach to peak in under an hour
If you’re short of time, but like the idea of taking a picturesque driving route that offers a complete contrast of scenery, a good choice is to traverse the TF28 route from Los Cristianos to Vilaflor. Passing through La Camella and Valle San Lorenzo, the route takes you from a bustling coastal resort to the village of Vilaflor, the highest village in Spain, in just an hour.
5. Mount Teide National Park
As one of the Canary Island’s most spectacular natural attractions, Mount Teide National Park makes for one of the most scenic driving routes in Tenerife. By driving through the park you can fully appreciate the weird and wonderful volcanic landscapes that are characteristic of this area. You’ll be hot on the tourist trail, however, so don’t expect to have the roads all to yourself.
6. Traditional villages
The drive from La Orotava to Icod de los Vinos is punctuated by pretty, traditional villages and towns that warrant a look at. In particular, Los Realejos boasts an attractive old quarter, with fine buildings and steep streets, lending it an almost Italian vibe. The drive continues up towards El Lance. As a popular spot for paragliders to launch themselves from, you can expect some pretty breath-taking views.
