Virgin of Candelaria, the prettiest, the darkest,
she who spreads her cloak from the summits to the sand

When it comes to songs, there is no self-respecting folk group, traditional ensemble or gathering of friends which does not strike up this popular song dedicated to the spiritual patroness of the Canary Islands: Our Lady of Candelaria, enthroned in the main altar of the basilica of the town of the same name in southern Tenerife.

From that faraway year of 1400 – when, according to the chronicles, the Virgin Mary appeared before two guanches (primitive peoples of Tenerife) – to today, devotion to this black Madonna is especially fervent during the months of February and August, on account of the religious ceremonies and festivities celebrated in her honour.
