174 people rescued after road collapsed

Three helicopters worked on the evacuation of people who were stranded when a section of road between Buenavista del Norte and Punta de Teno, collapsed. The evacuation which rescued 174 people, ended around 2.00am this morning. Sources of the Cabildo of Tenerife have reported that the evacuation operation has been performed normally and those affected have been transferred by helicopter to the port of Garachico and from there several buses move them to their places of origin.


The evacuation of people occurred after the fall of a stretch of eight meters long and four wide of the TF-445 road that connects Buenavista del Norte and Punta de Teno. It also trapped 60 vehicles.

The president of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, went to the area to monitor the evacuation operation that consisted of Fire Consortium of Tenerife, three helicopters Army a helicopter Emergency and Rescue Group (Canary Islands Government), three boats from Santiago del Teide and members of the Civil Guard, Local Police, and Civil Protection. Also, members of Red Cross mobilized in the Port of Garachico and Los Gigantes. The road will remain closed until further notice.
